Make a detailed sketch ahead of time, and choose exactly which colors you will use and where. That way when it's time to paint, you can get right at it without having to constantly make decisions.
Try creating a digital mockup of your mural — take a photo of the wall you're painting and try ideas directly on it so that you can see what it will look like in its environment.
Laminate a few printouts of your reference image. The plastic coating will give you a sturdy image to hold so that the wind can’t blow it out of your hands, and will prevent it from getting crumpled and dirty.
If your mural has large areas that can be filled in with solid color, bring on a friend to help you while you focus on details in other areas.
Being a muralist is like being like an athlete — stay hydrated, eat well, and get plenty of rest. You’re on your feet all day, weathering the elements, and you need to have stamina.
Be sure and document your process along the way and take great photos of your finished project. You'll be ready when the next blank wall comes along!
